It was time for bed last night but I wasn’t feeling sleepy. I decided to take a few minutes in Photoshop and make something random off the top of my head. I do this a lot actually, it’s a good way to experiment without any pressure. Most of the time I just end up with some random design that I’m sure under some Freudian psychoanalysis represents some repressed part of my being. Last night I decided to make a new background. I ended up with something that looks great. Use if if you wish.

click for 1680x1050

(Thanks to Brusheezy for some brushes! Also, I went to bed after making this and still couldn’t fall asleep so I started to read this gem and it put me right out!)

Process is key. Don’t be a hack. A lot of things happen spontaneously, but professionally and personally the most rewarding things are likely to be the ones that took the most time to develop and the most effort to see through. I’ve been thinking a lot recently about Process and how it can take a post-college job search from zero to sixty pretty quickly.

Maybe the best example of Process at its finest is in great design work. Great designs are well thought out, and many pretty good ideas must be pushed to the side in order to find the one that truly works. It takes practice, research, time, and effort to get something that is top notch. Oh, trial and error too. All of it is part of the Process of obtaining the end goal; whatever it may be.

Just for fun I am posting some sketches I made in the process of designing a banner ad, and the one I ended up using.

When I was a freshman and Drexel I started my own little tradition. I wanted to spread the love on Valentine’s day, but handing out store bought cards or candy wasn’t the way I wanted to take care of business. So I made a totally gaudy, cheesy, and self indulgent Valentine’s Day card and handed it out to just about anyone I even remotely knew.

Well, it was a blast and I kept it up over the past 2 years. Now it’s time for version 4.0! Let me know if you have any special ideas about this year’s card. MORE IMPORTANTLY: If you want a card and don’t live in the Philadelphia area email me your (snail mail) address at dave@daveRoy.net!!

I’m posting for nostalgic pleasure the first 3 versions of my Valentine’s day shenanigans. (from a design perspective it’s sort of interesting to see the progression).

It may not win any beauty contests, or any drag races, but it sure has charm. My family’s 1994 Dodge Grand Caravan which we drove off the lot back in Wisconsin just traveled its 170,000th mile. If this car was a person it would be old enough to drive itself. The van has covered enough miles to reach around the Earth almost 7 times. This car literally helped raise a family, and it’s still standing strong. It’s newest assignment, taking me up and down I-76 six times a week, is no small task. I don’t know if it will make the 200,000 mark, but it’s earned itself a spot in the hard working vehicle hall of fame.
